"Targeting chemoresistance in multiple myeloma cells by curcumin"
Human multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable cancer of the bone marrow. Almost 90% of the patients eventually develop resistance most likely due to a defect in cell death mechanism. We propose the use of curcumin, a component of turmeric to overcome resistance. We have shown that curcumin inhibits activation of NF-kB and induces the cell death in MM cells. Based on these studies, we propose to determine potential mechanisms of chemoresistance in MM cells and to determine if curcumin can reverse the resistance to dexamethasone, melphalan, and doxorubicin in MM cells.
