"Therapeutic Intervention in Myeloma: FGFR3 as Drug Target"
Fellows' Award Recipient, 2002

The identification of cancer-specific changes as the cause of cancer offers the potential for rational therapeutic interventions. We have identified FGFR3 as a cancer-associate gene in myeloma and plan to identify drugs that can specify its function. In preclinical studies, we will assess the ability of these drugs to selectively block the growth of myeloma cells that express FGFR3. We will also characterize potential mechanisms by which these drugs may cause tumor regressions. Finally, if successful, we will determine whether these drugs can eradicate tumors in animals. We hope that this will lead to the development of more effective and less toxic therapy for myeloma.
