"Role of Bone Marrow Stromal Cells in De Novo Resistance of Myeloma Cells to Chemotherapeutic Drugs"
Fellows' Award Recipient, 2002
Despite recent advances in the treatment of multiple myeloma, this disease still remains incurable. One reason for this is the ability of myeloma cells to survive during initial treatment with chemotherapeutic drugs. There are limited data demonstrating that bone marrow stroma plays an important role in survival of tumor cells. Present study will focus on the role of bone marrow stroma in survival of myeloma cells from cytotoxic drugs and mechanisms, which mediate this bone marrow stroma effect.
