"A Gene Therapy Approach for Multiple Myeloma"
Senior Research Grant Recipient, 2001
Myeloma cells are very sensitive to radiation therapy but eradication of the disease using total body irradiation is not possible due to toxicity. Advanced thyroid cancer is treatable with radioactive iodine because the thyroid cells selectively take up and concentrate radioiodine, leading to their death. The aim of this project is to induce myeloma cells to express the thyroidal protein that allows thyroid cells to take up radioiodine. Myeloma cells expressing this protein should take up radioiodine selectively, leading to their eradication while avoiding toxicity to other organs.
