The MMRF supports innovative research efforts in the most promising areas of multiple myeloma research through several grant-making programs. The MMRF accepts applications from U.S.-based and international non-profit institutions and universities. Program guidelines and applications are available approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the submission deadline. Open funding cycles and deadlines vary, so be sure to visit the MMRF's website for future opportunities!
MMRF Research Grant Awards
Significant advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology and molecular biology involved in multiple myeloma have identified numerous putative molecular targets for therapeutic intervention. The MMRF welcomes proposals on any and all multiple myeloma related topics to the traditional Research Grant Award Programs.
-
Fellows Awards provide funding to researchers with less than five years experience (post graduate degree) and working under the supervision of a research sponsor. Proposals may request up to $75,000 for one year. The deadline to submit an application for the Fellows Award was March 1, 2007. Anticipated applicant notification date is early May.
-
Senior Research Awards provide funding to investigators who have been working in blood cancer research for a minimum of five years. Proposals may request up to $100,000 per year for two years. The deadline to submit an application for the Senior Research Award was May 1, 2007. Anticipated applicant notification date is end of July.
Special Request for Proposals (RFPs)
The RFPs are designed to support research projects outside the scope of the MMRF's traditional Research Grants Program. These special funding opportunities are created to address critical research needs and to advance important research and drug discovery efforts. Programs are subject to funding availability and may change throughout the year.

Animal Model Development: Animal models are an important research tool for validating potential therapeutics for myeloma. However, today there are few available multiple myeloma mouse model systems for these critical studies. The Animal Model Development Award supports the development of a disease-representative mouse model. Proposals may request up to $100,000 per year for two years. The deadline to submit an Animal Model Development Award was March 30, 2007. Anticipated applicant notification date is mid June.
-
Compound Validation Awards: With a multitude of therapeutic options under investigation for multiple myeloma, the ability to identify those that show the most potential in treating the disease is of critical importance. One of the most effective and efficient ways to do this is through is pre-clinical validation. The Compound Validation Awards were developed to advance the science of pre-clinical validation in multiple myeloma. Proposals may request up to $100,000 for one year. The deadline to submit an application for the Compound Validation Awards is July 31, 2007. Anticipated applicant notification date is mid October.

Validation of Novel Combination Awards: Novel combination therapies and the sequencing of these therapies hold tremendous promise in treating multiple myeloma. The Validation of Novel Combinations Awards were developed to support the testing of several targeted therapeutic agents-either novel or currently available compounds-in innovative, rationally-designed combinations and sequences. Proposals may request up to $100,000 for one year. The deadline to submit an application for the Validation of Novel Combinations Awards is July 31, 2007. Anticipated applicant notification date is mid October.

LEAD Awards: LEAD (Leveraging Existing myeloma targets to Accelerate Drug discovery and development), the latest example of several field-innovating programs launched by the MMRF, will bring together and foster collaboration between academic myeloma experts with experts in the biotechnology industry to accelerate drug discovery and development for new treatments for myeloma. The marriage of these two fields of experts will bring new therapeutic entities to be rapidly tested in pre-clinical studies in myeloma. The MMRF has pledged up to $6 million USD to support multiple projects in this multi-year initiative. The MMRF will accept applications for the LEAD program between August 1 and October 1, 2007. Anticipated applicant notification date is early November.
