Title:  
SWOG 0204, Phase II Trial of Thalidomide/Dexamethasone Induction Followed by Tandem Melphalan Transplant and Prednisone/Thalidomide Maintenance in Newly Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma Patients
Phase:  
Purpose:  
To assess efficacy and toxicity of thalidomide/dexamethasone as a pre-transplant induction regimen. To evaluate the immune reconstitution and recovery post-transplant for both first and second transplants
Eligibility:  
Patients must have newly diagnosed active multiple myeloma requiring treatment as outlined in the protocol. Patients with IgM peaks are not eligible unless there is either >30% bone marrow plasmacytosis or >3 lytic lesions on skeletal survey.
Treatment:  
Patients will receive the drug Dexamethasone by mouth on Days 4, days 9-12, and days 17-20. Treatment will be repeated every 35 days for 3 cycles. The next step will be stem cell collection.
